The Lost Symbol

It took 2 days for me to finish this book. It can be said that I'm a fan of Dan Brown's works. Especially the phenomenal "The Da Vinci Code". It's not merely due to it's conspiracy theory but also the spellbinding telling about digging and revealing ancient-centuries secrets and histories.
Despite the difficulties in imagining some places in this story and the history itself, once again, the author has drag me into amazement with his charm.

This book tells about Robert Langdon's new adventure, this time is taking place at the capital city of United States, Washington D.C. Once again, the genius symbologist was faced with mystery, codes, and symbols that full of danger which lead to the greatest secret ever in the history of United States, and even in the world. The lecture invitation changed to be a death invitation of Mysterious Hand made from the right hand of Langdon's best friend and mentor, who also the Honor Member of Freemasonry. Somebody has kidnapped Peter Solomon and asked Langdon to find out the treasure hidden beneath the building, an ancient portal, a mason pyramid, symbolon, and The Ancient Mystery, the legend.

The kidnapper believes that "The Lost Word"  or verbum significiatium will help him to release his mortal body that veils his soul. He believes that the secret is how to die, a sacrifice of sacred . And when "The Lost Word" has been written thus a man will be granted with unbelievable power. In the right hand it will be good but in the wrong hand it will be destruction. The Kidnapper needs Langdon to find him the "Lost Word" that kept for centuries out there somewhere in Washington D.C. And the worse is that Langdon believes it only a myth, a legend guarded by ancient hence possible to found.

The adventures brings Langdon to some famous buildings around the capital city, from National Mall, a broad, tree-lined avenue that extends from the United States Capitol building to the Library of Congress, Mason temples, and the towering obelisk of the Washington Monument. Langdon must struggle with lots of human histories, Mason histories, science histories, architectures, some great scientist ever in the world and their remarkable inventions, Holy Scripture, many ancient languages to decode the pyramid symbols, and what so-called as Neotic.

walking around at the Old City

Old houses and buildings always have attractive appeal for me, especially those built during the Dutch colonial era. I can find few of them around my lovely small town, some are still being carefully taken care, but others are left in ruins or abandoned.

I must go to Semarang (the capital city of Central Java, Indonesia; about an hour trip from my town) to see lots of old buildings. Based on history, there is one area in Semarang that once had been the central of trade, it's called Kota Lama or Odstadt or Little Netherland.

Actually, this place is passed by some public transportations. Yet, sometimes we cannot see the whole appearance it offers (hence to take pictures). So, last two year, with a friend of mine, I visited it to take some pictures. So, we walked around in the middle of the day and enjoying sitting on a pedicab to take a tour. Unfortunately, we could not see the place at night, where I'm sure that it will offer something different of sightseeing and atmosphere.

In general, the characteristic of buildings in this area was following Europe architecture of 1700s. This can be seen from the typical building details and identical ornaments of the continent's style. For example, the huge size of door and window, colorful window glasses, unique roof shape, until the existence of underground room.

The most famous building in here is a church that still being used until now. It's called Blenduk Church. It's named due to its unique red dome.  And the building itself is very huge.

As I previously told, this area has a very busy street.  Sometimes we was distracted by the traffic or crowded (or to take pictures without any persons or vehicles in it; again, that's why I want to see it at night).

riding bicycle is a good idea here

Also, near this complex we can arrive a "Polder"  - in front of Tawang rail station - which has a function of blood control but now also renovated as a public space. There are cement-benches and circle path surrounds the polder can be used for doing exercises such as walking and jogging in the morning and evening.
old and new

reflection ...

I do believe that those buildings have their own stories, and memories. Standing still and keep on watching every changes, moments, and time passed by.

memories

Do you have any favorite song that you play and listen to over and over? I have, this one is the most favorite and meaningful song to me. First time I know this song was introduced by my friend who has bulk collection of indie-metal-gothic-underground  songs.
It is included in the Within Temptation album "Silent Force" (2004). It not need a longer time for me to  fall in love with this band, their songs, their lyrics, their music. The whole album is awesome, which makes it difficult for me to choose which one is the my favorite. But finally I choose "memories". There are some reasons why I do extremely love this song:  the title, its deep-meaning lyrics, and made perfect by the clip video. I don't know, but I just feel that this song is "really me".

Check this lyric out:

Memories

In this world you tried,
Not leaving me alone behind.
There's no other way,
I pray to the gods let him stay.
The memories ease the pain inside,
And now I know why.

All of my memories keep you near.
In silent moments,
Imagining you here.
All of my memories keep you near,
In silent whispers, silent tears

Made me promise I'd try,
To find my way back in this life.
Hope there is a way,
To give me a sign you're okay.
Reminds me again it's worth it all,
So I can go home.

All of my memories keep you near.
In silent moments,
Imagining you here.
All of my memories keep you near.
In silent whispers, silent tears.

Together in all these memories,
I see your smile.
All of the memories I hold dear.
Darling you know I'll love you,
Til the end of time.

All of my memories keep you near
In silent moments,
Imagining you here.
All of my memories keep you near,
In silent whispers, silent tears.

All of my memories...

So what's your favorite song? Or, what is your memories?

Laura's Little House

Today I got an email from my friend who right now is staying in USA. Actually she works in my country but taking 6 months off in every two year. She was a former student of mine. I taught her Indonesian.

In her email she told that before going back to Indonesia she will stay in Wisconsin. I haven't been in USA before but I know some of its States. And Wisconsin has called me up about a children book I've ever read and one of my favorite: The Little House series written by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Initially, I became acquainted with the story of a little girl named Laura was from old television drama series  of "Little House on the Prairie". I was still in my elementary school that time. And my mom told me that she also watched the drama series when she was at the same age as me! I still remember the famous Michael London in it.

Until today I haven't known the ending of the story in the television series, but when I was in my third year of senior high school, I found the books at my friend's neighbor house. Later on I know that the story was a true story of the author and it has 11series. And after I can make some money of my own, I started to collect the books, every month I bought one book patiently until it's complete (although, fortunately, three of them were found by me in a second-hand book store).

To sum up, the series are telling a story about Laura and her Family, Ingalls family. The setting was around 1870-1889s when Ingalls family - as many other pioneer families - had their journey to open the land, riding their horse wagon, cropping, harvesting, etc. They roamed some territories of Kansas, Minnesota and finally Dakota, where Laura met and married to Almanzo Wilder.

For me, the story itself is very splendid and attractive. From the beginning we can follow the adventure of little Laura, living in the bg woods, helping mother with various yummy foods, playing on the prairie, sliding in a bobsleigh, Christmas's gifts, Pa's telling stories and playing violin, and many other things.

Also, there are some pictures illustrated by Garth Williams who did the research for 10 ten years, where he really followed the tracks had been traveled by Ingalls family.

Book 1 - Little House in The Big Woods
On 1872, there was a little lovely gorl named Laura Ingalls Wilder who lived with her father, mother, older sister, and younger sister, in a log cabin  in the edge of The Big Woods.
They lived in outlying, remote from human settlement. They lived self-supporting, namely from wheat planted in space of felled treed, from animal, birds or fish caught by her father. Usually, meats from those animals were preserved by salt and smoked, properly stored for their stock in facing winter season.
Live was truly hard and difficult, but that did not meant there was no cheerfulness and joys at all. There was a time when family are gathering with relatives, making maple sugar, or in Christmas when they changed gifts to each others.

Book 2 - Little House on The Prairie
The Big Woods had been crowded by settlement. That was why Pa sold their little log house  and made a horse wagon covered canvas cloth. They were going to move to Indian Land! They went through a very long journey from Wisconsin to a very distant region of Oklahoma. In this new land, Pa built a little house on the middle of prairie.
All year long, Pa, Ma, Mary, and Laura put all their energy and mind to their land and their little save and comfort house. However, the land they lived in was still belong to Indian people, and finally the government asked them to leave.

Book 3 - Farmer Boy
It was a childhood story of Almanzo Wilder, a boy who later on would get married to Laura.
Almanzo and his family did not do roving as pioneer because his father had owned his own land in the State of New York. But Wilders children also had to work hard - cattle and field needed to be handled all the year round, and they had to go to school if there wasn't an important work to do.
So, Almanzo and his brothers and sisters had to plow and spread seeds, and reap and whop wheats. Yet, he also enjoyed lots of excitements such as when Almanzo gave the raspberry and joke to his father when he was cutting lamb's wool, went to the Fair, take a trip on Christmas, and a very exciting week when four children of Wilder were let alone in the field to do what they like. Meanwhile, Almanzo always had pleasant things in his mind that soon after he finished all works in the field then he would get a col to be tamed by himself.

Book 4 - On The Banks of Plum Creek
Laura and her sisters should live in some peculiar places in their journey to the unknown West. But, the most strange of it was a little house made under the river embankment, which had made this story is even more interesting. Whomsoever read the books of Little House in The Big Woods and Little House on The Prairie must definitely know about he adventure of Pa and Ma and their little daughters accompanied by their dog named Jack, to their newest house here, with a very vast prairie under the sun beam. Because one-two other families also settled there, thus Laura and Mary went to school for their first time. Also, at that place they held a party for the first time.
However, the place was still a very ferocious one. There were lots of mantis folds that formed just like a very thick cloud and attacked almost-harvested field. And there came heavy snowstorm in the winter. And, What happened to Pa when he was away to get the Christmas gifts?

Book 5 - By The Stories of Silver Lake
During the development of railway and the last stages of West settlement, Ingalls family left Minnesota - On The Banks of Plum Creek - and went to Dakota. While waiting the chance for seeking and occupying, and getting the land that had been promised by government, thus Pa temporarily worked for railway company. Ingalls family spent their winter in a sumeyer's house, where their closest neighbor was about 75 kilometer in distant. Thrilling moments came when Laura and Mary for their first time on the train. Also, the incident of robbery to the salary that had been trusted to Pa to hold them. Their Christmas day of that year was very wonderful. In Spring, Pa built the first wooden building in the place of a future town near their land. Two weeks later the new town was born.

Book 6 - The Long Winter
An Indian warned Pa that the winter season of 1880-1881 would be the hardest and worst winter ever occurred in Dakota. Therefore, Pa brought his family to move to the town from their work-on land. The town was badly hit by the snow and the communication with outer world had broken off.
Laura and Mary could no longer go to school. When Christmas passed by and the need of food increasingly came to a head, Almanzo Wilder and one other young man made bold to cross the snow-covered prairie to seek for the food (wheat).
Ere on May the snow melted and the train could come. Hence, Ingalls family got their Christmas presents, and the Christmas on this May was the most beautiful Christmas they've ever had.

Book 7 - Little Town On The Prairie
Little group of houses and settlement that been suffered by the long and worst winter during 1880-1881 now becoming a very rapid-growth one.
There was held The Independence Day of July 4th, and Laura also went to attend a social night.
Also, the easily-becomes-jealous Nellie had moved from the banks of Plum Creek to the town. She became more discomforts for Laura.
Ingalls was very well. At last, Mary was success in enrolling a university special for blind people.
The most wonderful thing was Almanzo Wilder asked permission to walk together to see back Laura from the church, and the changed name card. Laura was fifteen years old now, obtaining her certificate to teach in school.

Book 8 - These Happy Golden Years
Laura was not 16 years old yet and should for the first time  to teach in a school. Her first school as teacher was a decrepit building on an abandoned field. Despite the homesick, Laura she was determined to finish her teaching phase in order to help Pa financing Mary in the university.
Laura only could see Mary's education progress during school holiday. Also, in this time she could be very happy enjoying sleigh rides, and best of all, helping Almanzo Wilder drive his new buggy.
The next year Laura taught in a new school. She got engaged with Almanzo, and the next spring they got married and moved to their own land.

Book 9 - The First Four Years
Laura Ingalls Wilder is beginning life with her new husband, Almanzo, in their own little house. Laura is a young pioneer wife now, and must work hard with Almanzo, farming the land around their home on the South Dakota prairie. Soon their baby daughter, Rose, is born, and the young family must face the hardships and triumphs encountered by so many American pioneers.
And so Laura Ingalls Wilder's adventure as a little pioneer girl ends, and her new life as a pioneer wife and mother begins. The nine Little House books have been cherished by generations of readers as both a unique glimpse into America's frontier past and a heartwarming, unforgettable story.

Book 10 - On The Way Home
A journey diary from South Dakota to Mansfield, Missouri in 1894.
With additional note from Rose Wilder Lane.
This book tells about a pioneer family began their journey from drought-suffered South Dakota to a new land - a new beginning - in Ozarkas. This family was Almanzo, Wilder, Laura Ingalls WIlder, the wife, and their 7-years old daughter Rose.
Here can be found some pictures of the author, the family, etc.

Book 11 - West From Home
Letters form Laura Ingalls Wilder to Almanzo Wilder, San Fransisco, 1915.
There are also some pictures can be found here.

By the time she was thirteen years old, Laura had moved from the thick Wisconsin woods to the wide-open Kansas prairie, out to the fertile Minnesota plain, and finally to a brand-new town at the end of a railroad line in Dakota Territory. True pioneers, Laura and her family faced everything, from severe droughts and bone-chilling winters to crop failures and grasshopper invasions, in their long search for a new life on land of their own.

Laura was a spirited and courageous girl from the start, and her life on the frontier was a nonstop adventure. She worked hard helping Ma and Pa in the house, and on the family's farm, but there was always time for fun—which meant climbing trees, riding horses, sledding, playing with her three sisters, and singing along with Pa's fiddle. Laura also loved school, and at age fifteen, she became a teacher like her mother. Three years later, she married a quiet farm boy from northern New York named Almanzo Wilder.

Amélie

One of my friend - who owns a video rental place - recommended me this movie, because he knows that I'm a drama-comedy movies lover. He told me that I'm gonna like it. It's a French movie and very funny, he said.
Indeed, it's splendid!

In Indonesian original VCD the title shown "Amelie" but l it's original title is  Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain which has meaning "The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain". Although it is in French but I do enjoy to watch it over and over again. The story, the plot, the players, the setting, etc are fabulous. And, it's very funny although there are some ironical things lie within.

Amélie tells about the story of a girl named Amélie Poulain (played by Audrey Tautou). It starts with the day she was born (September 3, 1973 in Enghien in the northern suburbs of Paris) . Her father was a former army physician and her mother was a school headmaster.  Things the like and dislike. However, Amélie's childhood was different. She had no other siblings and could not go to the school just like other children (foolishly, it was caused by her father's mistaken concerns of a heart defect, while in fact her daughter was just nervous by her father touch which was very rare). So, being lived with a cold-hearted father and a neurotic-easily depressed mother, had led  Amélie to resort to her own fantastical world and dreams of love and beauty.
Also at this age Amélie's mother died due to weird cause (a Québécoise woman who commits suicide by jumping off the top of Notre Dame Cathedral and lands on Amélie's mother) and her father spent most of his time by making garden's memorial dedicated to his wife.

Amélie moves to Paris when she becomes a young woman and works as a waitress in café Deux Moulins in Montmartre. She is still a different girl with her own isolation life. There she meets some few people who are going to be entwined in this story (people in Deux Moulins and the few people who live in the same apartment with her, absolutely with all their different stories, this also including her own father). And, decided to to change the lives of those around her for the better. It was begun from the breaking news of Lady Diana's death by accident (August 31, 1997) and a 40-years old box hidden in her bathroom wall which she found it coincidently!
From the purpose of finding the owner of the old box,  this lovely girl has her own adventure of helping other people and meet  a  man (Nino Quincampoix, played by Mathieu Kassovitz) who loves collecting other people torn  photographs at many fotobox in some Paris's railway stations.
Amélie falls in love with him and struggle for her own isolation and affection in her own different way.
Five stars for this!

Facts about this movie:
It was produced in 2001 by the Director of Jean-Pierre Jeunet. It was written by Jeunet and
Guillaume Laurant.

Amélie won best film at the European Film Awards; it won four César Awards (including Best Film and Best Director), two BAFTA Awards (including Best Original Screenplay), and was nominated for five Academy Awards. (See below for other awards and recognition.)

my name is santi

well, i'm not following the title of a newest Indian movie starred by Shahrukh Khan, no. but, maybe just got a little inspiration from it. and i won't talk about the movie either.

instead, i wanna talk a about name.

a famous Shakespeare's remark is
"what's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet."

but, it name does matter in my family, in my culture (in this case, i'm a Javanese girl). name always has its meaning and purpose. sometimes too light, some other time too heavy. sometimes just trivial but other carries deep expectation in it.
okay, my name is "sari susanti" (and i'm always called as "santi"). my father made it himself and gave it to me, a second daughter in my family. i never thought about it, the only thing i knew that the name of "santi" was a common name, a lot of girls and women named with it. then, when i was in elementary school, after one of my teacher asked what is the meaning of my name, i turned to ask him. he said that my name has a meaning of  "lovely flower".

when i'm getting older i could find out the meaning of my own name. first, i gained it from my mother language. in Javanese: "sari"  means "concentrate, extract, juicy, pith, core". while, "susanti" has a meaning of "example, model". wow, don't you think i have a great name?

later on, i knew that the name of "santi" can be found in other languages.
for example in Buddhism and Hinduism mantra: "om santi santi santi hari om"
Shanti (Santi) here means "peace", it is said three times which is generally interpreted as meaning the Threefold Peace in body, speech, and mind (i.e. peace in the entirety of one’s being).
once again, wow!

from Asia i move to Europe, because the name "santi" also can be found here. especially it has its origins in Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.

in Spain, the name Santi is a nickname type of surname for a person who was born on All Saint's Day. In the medieval chronicles, the name was originally recorded in the Latin form Sanctorum.
similarly, Italian: from the personal name Santi, plural form of Santo a short form of the devotional name Ognisanti, probably bestowed on a child born on All Saints’ Day

that's all that can get so far. one name, various meanings.
no matter what, i do love my name.
also, my other nickname

lovely accessories

both my sister and me do fond of accessories, especially bracelets. they come from many places (from Java to Papua), whether bought by ourselves and given by friends. the first thing we search or ask when going somewhere (or a new place) is bracelet. also, we ask bracelet as gift when our friends are going somewhere. even, we get them from our aunt who stays abroad!
we have small beads, plastic, string-like, rope-like, silver, gold, Chinese jade, shoelace, stones, magnet, and even rubber ones. indeed, they are so colorful!

some of them we wear for special moments like wedding party, relative gathering, etc. almost every day, we mix and match them with our clothes, or just depending on our mood.

sometimes we are gettin' confused to pick one for a day, and many others are forgotten or only kept in the box, left untouched.

from one box now we have three! and, i definitely sure it will keep on increase.
